Let's get real for a minute... if you're on my list, you're trying to make money online.
How are you doing that? Affiliate marketing? Ads? Your own products or services? Any way you do, I know you've come across what I call "Bro Marketers."
Those guys who do nothing but try to sell you products that help you sell products. They show you pictures of them with fancy cars or big houses. They talk about funnels like it's the Holy Grail.
You know those guys too? I'm tired of them.
They over promise and under deliver. They gross me out with their sell at any cost mentality. Reading their sales copy leaves me feeling slimy.
I think we need to start a group of "Sister Marketers" whose goal is to bring people together and sell them what they really need to help them grow and prosper. We'll overdeliver on every promise and blow people away with our generous spirit. We'll believe in connection over competition and know that there is more than enough to go around.
In that spirit, I've been working on a secret project for the last few months. It's almost time to tell you about it, but in the meantime, I'm going to go over some of the ways that we can work together to be better marketers.

So, my Sister Marketers, let's make some changes in online marketing!
This week we are going to talk about the first mistake I see from Bro Marketers, insincere pressure.
I'm not talking about that bit of pressure that everyone uses in sales copy. The sense of urgency that helps people make a decision. I'm talking about PRESSURE.
I see these guys using pressure to increase their sales at the cost of their customer's well-being. Suggesting that people can use a credit card to pay with promises that they'll make their money back in the first 30 days. Or suggesting that their product is fool-proof so you have nothing to lose.
Pressure that feels icky and insincere. These guys don't actually care about you, or about your success or failure.
So how can we, as Sister Marketers, do better?
We can focus on helping our customers to succeed without sacrificing their emotional, financial or personal health. We can actually care about selling our products to the right people, not just any people.
And most importantly, we can stay truthful in our marketing.

Laurie said: "Yes...yes...yes! We can't do it all, and really should promote one another."
Drew said: "LOVE this message. I call them people that keep Zuckerberg's pockets filled with cash." (Even men are on board with this message!)
This week I'm going to talk about the over promise but under deliver tendency with Bro Marketers.
Last year when I was going through my copywriting training I came across a stereotypical Bro Marketer promoting his copywriting checklists. I was trying to absorb everything copywriting at that time (still am, really) and so I bought them for $17.
Anticipating something really helpful, I hurriedly clicked on the download link. What appeared was pretty much gibberish. I'm guessing if you were one of his students who knew his shorthand for things it might have helped. But as a stand-alone product? It made no sense!!!
And then I started to get his emails. Telling me how much more sense it would make when I joined his course. That's right, the under-delivering was a SALES TACTIC!!!
I mean, can you even believe that?
I spent $17 for the privilege of accessing a product that made no sense unless you were willing to pay hundreds of dollars more.
But you know, it was a turning point for me. That was the moment I stopped paying attention to anyone with a Bro Marketing attitude. I unfollowed people. I unsubscribed from mailing lists. And I focused on people who were truly helpful.
Because I would way rather under-promise and OVER deliver and those are the types of people I want to hang out with.
So which type are you? And which type do you want to hang out with?

I had no idea this concept of Bro Marketing would hit home to so many people. It's started some great conversations over email and I'm so appreciative of everyone whose taken the time to email me back with their experience and perspective.
This week I got a reply from Alison that really made me think.
Alison said this: "I've heard this term before on someone else's ads, and while I agree with the concept of over-promise and under-deliver, I think it's problematic to associate it only with "bro's" (male marketers.)
There are MANY women who do this as well.
I agree we need to call people out who lack integrity, but the problem with "bro marketing" as a term is that it isolates and divides people who are potentially offering great solutions."
She's not wrong. There are plenty of women who are part of the problem. Personally, I still refer to them as Bro Marketers, but maybe we need a more gender-neutral term so it doesn't demonize an entire gender. (Suggestions?)
There are plenty of men who provide amazing content in the online marketing space. And I follow plenty of them! You'll miss out on some pretty great information if you stop following based on gender.
Let's get back on track and talk about Bro Marketing Mistake #3, too much flash.
I think a reader named Kathryn described this best: "I attended countless webinars which although free, took my rare free time only to offer zero value (a lot of waffle and blah blah) just to try and sell me a course at the end where I would find out what I wanted to know…"
The marketers who try to talk themselves up so much that they make no connection with their audience. Cause let's be real, we don't really care about them.
When was the last time you saw a marketer who was trying to convince you that you should buy something because they were such an awesome, rich, beautiful, amazing person? I bet it was in the last 24 hours.
This type of person seems to forget that it's not all about them. We need to know that they can help US!
And if we are going to be a different type of marketer, then we need to focus on being real and being helpful.
Next week I'm going to share with you something that is going to help you learn a new flavor of online marketing. Something that will help you grow your business without giving up on your ideals.

Who are your best customers? I'm gonna guess that like me, your best customers are people that you've built a relationship with.
Whether it's taking a few minutes to answer an email or a question in a Facebook group, making a personal connection is remembered.
And that's Bro Marketing Mistake #4, not taking the time to build a connection.
Drew sent me an email this week telling me about someone who had reached out to him looking for an email marketing coach. Drew said, "He wasn't providing value at all, but he was achieving a 1% conversion rate simply because he blasted the affiliate offer about 15-20 times in a month."
You CAN sell by just bombarding people with offers, but that's not building a long-lasting customer relationship. You might sell something to that person once, but they're not going to be waiting anxiously for your next offering. They're going to forget you even exist.
Building a connection takes time and effort, but in the end, your marketing will be much more effective when you are speaking to people who "know" you.
These last few emails about bro marketing have been fun to write. I've enjoyed thinking about what really matters in marketing, and how we can start a Sister Marketers movement.
But now, I finally get to tell you about the HUGE project I've been working on for months that will help us all come together and learn from each other.
